Aperio viewer was very efficient in the presentation of the overview image, but in the Hospital (intranet) environment, the difference was only statistically significant (p = 0.05) when Aperio viewer was compared with the Olympus viewer. The University of Connecticut School of Medicine uses virtual microscopy as part of the curriculum. Virtual microscopy allows all students to simultaneously view microscope images right on their laptop screens. The microscope images can be zoomed in and out to offer high levels of detail. The virtual microscope software also allows instructors and students to run digital slide conference.
We have adopted the Aperio/Leica Digital Pathology Scanning microscope (Leica Biosystems, IL) for this purpose. The microscope was custom built for UCH and combines the functionality of a CS-O scanner – providing a 5-slide tray brightfield (light only/dry mode) scanning – and a CS-O scanner with a specialty built objective assembly that allows the slide tray and objective to be switched out for scanning in 100X mode under oil magnification.

The system consists of a student-facing application known as ImageScope, a server application known as Spectrum, web/application server, database server, and file server for storing images.

Follow these steps:
- Reserve the scanner by contacting AITS staff either in person at the T2C2 front desk (in Library), by phone at 860-679-4400 or by email to servicedesk@uchc.edu.
- AITS will insure the scanner is ready for use and provide you key access to the scanner room when you arrive for your scheduled time. If you are using the scanner for the first time, AITS will setup an account and provide you a quick primer on how to use the system.
Please note that AITS does NOT scan slides. This is a time-consuming and highly specialized function requiring domain knowledge, which our staff are not equipped to perform. If you need someone to scan the slides for you, we can coordinate with the Library to schedule a trained staff to scan. In this case, you must schedule the scan at least 48 hours in advance.

Our slides have been scanned and digitized permitting analysis and viewing of the slides at high resolution on your computer (“Virtual Microscopy”). These webslides are delivered from a central server to your personal computer that acts as a digital microscope. On our histology website () most of the slides will have two links to choose from, Aperio WebScope and Aperio ImageScope. Helpful Points: (1) Please open only one slide at a time to prevent crashing your computer. (2) Using a hardwire connection will speed loading of the webslides. (3) Bring a mouse, which makes use of the VM easier and faster. Aperio ImageScope: The ImageScope viewer is freeware from available from Aperio, the company providing our server software. The current version of ImageScope has a slight bug, but an older version is available on our own servers at. Click on the link provided and download the self-executable installation file to your computer (you may need to RIGHT CLICK and select the ' Save Lin k As.' Once downloaded, launch the.exe file and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation. Aperio ImageScope will only work in a Windows operating system. However, virtualization programs such as BootCamp, Parallels or VMware fusion can allow Mac users to run the Windows OS, within which you can then install and run ImageScope by following the steps listed above. Android smartphone/tablet users: Aperio WebScope runs in Flash, which is supported by most Android devices. IPhone/iPod/iPad users: The iOS does NOT support Flash, but there is an App called 'ePathViewer' developed by Aperio and available through the Apple iTunes Store; search for “Aperio” or “ePathViewer”. To view the slides from the Duke collection, you will need to upgrade to the full version --this can be done as an in-application purchase and costs $14.99. Once you have the app installed, open the app and browse to any of the Duke pathology or histology sites (note: do this within the ePathViewer app, NOT the native web browser).

However, any annotations cannot be saved using WebScope, only in ImageScope. Moving the Slide: Place the mouse pointer over the image. Click and drag the image by holding down the left mouse button as you move your mouse. Alternatively, the slide can be moved by clicking to the portion of the thumbnail that corresponds to the part of the slide you would like to view. If the thumbnail is not visible click the Thumbnail icon on the toolbar. Changing Objectives: You can change the magnification quickly by scrolling with your mouse wheel. Multimedia player mac os x.
