If you are having problems with your email, one common diagnostic aid is a complete list of the message's headers. Headers show the path a message took to get from the sender to the recipient. The IT Service Desk or other technical support may ask you to provide a message's headers.

  1. Open the message.
  2. Click the File tab on the message window (not the main Outlook window).
  3. Click Info in the left column (it may already be selected).
  4. Click Properties.

The Internet headers section of the Properties dialog box shows all headers.

If you need to copy the headers (to paste somewhere else),

  1. Click anywhere in the Internet headers section of the dialog box.
  2. On your keyboard, press ctrl-a; this selects all the text.
  3. Press ctrl-c; this copies the text to the clipboard.
  4. Then, with an email message or other document open, press ctrl-v to paste the header text into that document.

As I said I already have all the GP's that you said (for the most part you put 2003 settings and some changed in 2013). The issue isn't getting outlook into Headers only mode I am already doing that it is once in that mode it will first only download the headers but as you click though your inbox it actually downloads the full item and I was just looking for a setting to stop that from.

  • As these usually are metered connections and relatively expensive, Outlook will change to the following behavior: Fall back to “Download Headers” mode rather than using “Download Full Items”. Only downloads the full message body and attachments of a message when requested. Stop requesting for updates to the Offline Address Book (OAB).
  • Note: for slower connections like cellular hot spots, you might want to consider to check the Download message headers only box. Close the Accounts dialog.     When you select several mails to 'Export Email Headers To Excel' I see it generates several excel files ( as many as mails selected )
    Have you got the utility to bundle the export in just one excel file ?
