My page margin measurement settings are now showing in ‘points’ instead of ‘inches’. For example, I used to be able to set 1.0″ or 1.5″ margins.

Now all the options are showing as points..”72 pt” etc. Not sure what I did to change this. Can you help?

ANSWER:

1. I'm using Microsoft Word 2004 for Mac and just started having troubles with the horizontal ruler showing 13 inches even though the page set up is set at portrait and letter size. I've tried shutting down & restarting, changing margins on the document, making sure that the track changes isn't on.
2. Just take Microsoft Word 2010 for example, which is as well as in Word 2007 and 2013. With Classic Menu for Word 2007/2010/2013/2016/2019 installed, you can click Menus tab to get back the classic style interface. Click View menu. Choose Ruler in the drop down menu. And then you may see the horizontal and vertical ruler appearing in the document.
3. Choose 'Inches' to display the rulers in inches. This is the default option. Choose 'Centimeters' to display the rulers in centimeters. One inch equals 2.54 cm. Choose 'Picas' to display the rulers in Picas. Picas are a measurement unit used in printing; 1 inch equals 6 picas. Choose 'Pixels' to display the rulers in pixels.

Jun 28, 2010 By default, Microsoft Word uses inches as its unit of measurement in dialog boxes and on the ruler. You can change measurement units to centimeters, picas, points, or millimeters. This post shows you how to change this setting in Word 2016 and earlier.

The setting for units of measure is located on the Word Options menu in Microsoft Word 2007. Changing the measurement setting changes the margin and ruler measurements for all Word documents, not just the open document.

To change the measurement back to inches, follow these steps:

1. Click the Office Button, then Word Options. If you are using Microsoft Word 2010, click the File tab, then select Options.
   
2. On the Advanced tab, find the section labeled Display.
3. Under Show measurements in units of, select Inches from the drop-down menu.
4. Click OK.

That will set the page margin and ruler measurements back to inches. Can’t see the ruler? To display it, click the View tab, then select Ruler.

Just for Fun! 72 points = 1 inch = 6 picas.

I was frantic when I couldn’t find a plausible solution anywhere I searched. My Word 2007 documents were in pts and I couldn’t find a solution to reset to inches.

Thankfully I kept at it and found your website. Your answer was clear and concise, and fixed my problem immediately. Microsoft should be employing you, as that website was WORTHLESS.

Essentially, the unit of measurement used by Microsoft Windows 10 is determined by settings in place within the Regional Settings applet within the Control Panel. Choices available are U.S. and Metric. In this tutorial, we'll show you how you can change the units from U.S. to Metric, or vice versa.

Follow these steps to change the unit of measurement in Windows 10:

1. Close all open applications. Click the Windows button (highlighted in red within Figure 1) and then click the Settings option, as shown highlighted in blue within Figure 1.

You can also select the Control Panel option as shown highlighted in green within Figure 1, above. To use this option, look at our Change The Unit Of Measurement in Windows 8 tutorial; this option works the same way in Windows 10.
2. This opens the Settings dialog box, as shown in Figure 2. In this dialog box, select the Time & language option (highlighted in red with Figure 2).

3. This opens the Time & Language window, as shown in Figure 3. In this window, make sure that the Region & language option is selected on the sidebar, as shown highlighted in red within Figure 3. Then select the Additional date, time, & regional settings option, as shown highlighted in blue within Figure 3.

4. This brings up the Clock, Language, and Region window. Within this window, click on Region option as shown highlighted in red within Figure 4.

5. This opens the multi-tabbed Region dialog box that you can see in Figure 5. Within this dialog box, make sure that the Formats tab is selected, and click the Additional settings... button (highlighted in red within Figure 5).

6. This brings up another multi-tabbed Customize Format dialog box, as shown in Figure 6. Make sure that you are on the Numbers tab. Then locate the Measurement system option, click it, and choose Metric (or U.S.) from the resultant drop-down list, as shown highlighted in red within Figure 6.
